The book I read to research this post was The Rough Guide To Norfolk And Suffolk by Martin Dunford et al which is an excellent book that I bought on kindle. This is a really interesting guide to an area in Britain that is a good holiday destination but maybe to people abroad isn’t an obvious holiday region. Many people in Britain do go boating on the Norfolk Broads a series of canals and rivers designed to drain this very flat low lying area. Norwich which is the county town and a city of Norfolk has the second highest cathedral spire after Salisbury and it is one of the great cathedrals of Britain. It has also a Roman Catholic cathedral. At Cromer is the Amazona Zoo which has the theme of animals from the Amazon region and has a policy of never taking animals out of the wild. Most come from other zoos. There is the Sandringham Estate owned by the royal family. Kings Lynn the 3rd biggest town in Norfolk has a great developed and landscaped port area. Felixstowe is a major port that connects with Esjberg on the continent. Ipswich is the biggest town in Suffolk but apart from the re-developed port area has little of interest. It is one of the oldest towns in Britain. There is the greatest Anglo- Saxon burial mound found to date at Sutton Hoo and the museum does a good job of explaining the history. Many visitors coming to this area do so via London Stanstead which isn’t too far away in Essex. There is also Norwich Airport which takes short haul flights. A little bit outside the area is the historic city of Ely which has a very important cathedral. There is also Bury St Edmonds where King Canute built a monastery and had St Edmond interred. It was one of the great pilgrimage sites of the medieval world although the monastery is long gone. There are some great seaside resorts in this area which often aren’t too commercial. I really enjoyed reading this book and think it is an area I am interested in visiting.
